It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that Mavis (Muriel) passed away peacefully in her sleep on 21st June 2024, aged 106 years.
My friend Elaine (Mavis’s next-door neighbor) and I were privileged to visit Mavis the day before she passed. I thanked her for sharing her 106-year story and giving me insight into how to live such a long and healthy life.
Mavis still had purpose right until her final days. In April, she wanted skirts made, “not floral, just plain colors.” Mavis recently purchased 15 geraniums for her indoor glasshouse and would tend to them regularly.
During April and May, Mavis was hospitalized a few times, and it was then recommended that she move into aged care. Mavis was still living independently, alone at her home.
Mavis accepted this was best for herself and began planning what clothes and possessions she would take with her. Mavis moved into aged care in early June.
During my last conversation, Mavis told me she was feeling very tired and just wished to go to sleep and not wake up.
Mavis got her wish.
To Mavis’s granddaughter Susan (who was a “constant” helping Mavis with her wants and needs) and to her family and friends, I send my sincere, heartfelt thoughts, and sympathy.
Mavis can now Rest in Peace with her beloved husband Les and her three daughters Janice, Pat and Robyn.
Mavis you were such an inspiration and a grand lady. I will miss our conversations and I will miss you.
Till we meet again.
