Lifestyle Conversation – Garry Revisited

Song Bob Dylan – ‘Stuck Inside a Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again’

Garry is a Baby Boomer born in July 1950 (Baby Boomers are born between 1946 and 1964). Garry is 75 years young in July. I caught up with Garry to see how he has been going since we last spoke in July 2024. (See blog post July 25 2024).

One of Garry’s favourite artists Bob Dylan.

Garry – “My life has been going along as usual. Playing golf, spending time with family and friends.

Last October I went on a great holiday to South Africa with my wife. We toured Cape Town and surrounds but the highlight was going to Kruger National Park.

While I was away I became very sick with flu like symptoms. I ended up needing to see a doctor in a clinic and was prescribed antibiotics and steroids. I was sick for five days and missed a few tours but I eventually came good. My previous overseas trip was a cruise to The Caribbean and I got sick and ended up with pneumonia so at least I didn’t get pneumonia this time.

In December I picked up another flu and needed antibiotics again. The problem is after I get sick I end up with a persistent cough that lasts for months. I decided to investigate why I get so many flus and why I end up with a persistent cough.

This resulted in many specialists appointments. I had a 50% blockage in an artery but it didn’t require a stent. My lungs were fine. Both specialists suggested lifestyle changes such as more exercise and to lose weight.

Social times with friends is an important part of Garry’s life.

The lung specialist referred me to a Sleep Apnoea Specialist. They recommended that I trial a sleep apnoea machine and make some adjustments to my overall health.

I am going to Canada in August and plan to address my weight as soon as I get back.

Apart from that things have been the same since we last spoke. I still enjoy listening to and researching music and playing golf. I have taken up a new hobby. Fishing. I did a lot of fishing with my father and brother as a young teenager so I am keen to get back into it.

Spending time with family is very important to Garry.

I would hope to continue to play golf for many years to come so losing weight and getting fit will be a priority for me.

I hope in the next 12 months to lose a considerable amount of weight and will discuss with my doctor the possibility of taking Ozempic for weight loss. I would also like to become more fit through walking and strength training.”

Garry’s most recent hobby – Fishing

It is fantastic that Garry has decided to take the advice from his specialist to lose weigh and get more exercise . I will revisit how Garry is progressing in the next 12 months.

‘Keep on rocking and rolling’

  1. Ah this was inspirational to read. It’s wonderful to have passion like golf and music. I also plan to take up fishing in my retirement and was given a fishing rod for Christmas. And good on you Garry for addressing your health concerns and planning to do something about them.
